Quickstart: Your Own Data¶
Connect a data source, configure the semantic layer, and generate a document from your real data.
1. Create an account¶
Go to app.motley.ai and sign up with your work email.
If your organisation already uses Motley, ask an admin to invite you.
2. Connect a data source¶
On the welcome screen, click Connect data, then choose:
- Upload files: drag in a CSV or Excel file → Uploading Files
- Connect a database: link a MySQL or PostgreSQL database → Connecting a Database
Once connected, ingestion starts automatically. This might take a couple of minutes.
3. Install the Claude plugin¶
4. Review the semantic layer¶
After ingestion completes, Motley auto-generates a semantic layer for your source. You can refine it through Claude before generating documents. See semantic layer management.
5. Generate your first document¶
In Claude, describe what you want:
"Generate a [report type] using [source name]. Include [metrics] for [time range]."
Claude returns a link to the Motley document and a Markdown version of the report inline.
What's next¶
- Review the document: audit queries, edit blocks, export
- Refine the semantic layer: add measures, fix descriptions, set default filters
- Export to slides or a presentation
